Obituary for Bennett Miller Smith

Bennett Miller  Smith
Bennett M. Smith, age 95, passed away Friday, August 14, 2015 at Mount Vernon Veterans Home. Bennett was born in the Joplin area on October 16, 1919, the son of Walter and Edith (King) Smith.
He graduated from Carl Junction High School in 1937. He served his Country as a Sergeant with the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion, attached to the First Infantry Division, Company B. He landed at Omaha Beach with the first wave D-Day Invasion at Normandy. He later fought in the Battle of the Bulge and moved on to meet the Russian Army in Styre, Austria.
Bennett married Beverley (Cooke) Smith June 7, 1947 in Kansas City, Kansas. Bennett worked at Crown Coach Bus Lines prior to and after his military service. He retired From Chevron Oil Company after 35 years of service.
Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beverley, their oldest daughter Pamela and 2 sisters Evelyn and Janet.
Survivors include a son, Douglas of Shawnee, Kansas and a daughter, Laurel of Webb City. Additional survivors include 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Graveside service with military honors will be on Monday August 17, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Oronogo, MO. With Reverend Gerald Holden and Randy L. Wilson Minister officiating. The family suggests contributions to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the mortuary. Arrangements entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
